A brief letter from John to “the chosen lady”, urging believers to love one another and to be on guard against false teachings.
INTRODUCTION TO
2 John
Outline:
- Salutation. (ver. 1-3)
- Walk in obedient love. (ver. 4-6)
- Avoid false teachers. (ver. 7-11)
- Concluding remarks. (ver. 12-13)
Author: The Apostle John.
Date Written: Between a.d. 85 and 96.
Title: From the book’s author, John.
Background: John reveals in his first letter how a number of false teachers have broken from the church. Second John addresses some of the problems associated with these erroneous teachers, who travel through the area at the expense of both the church’s material and spiritual welfare. At the heart of these heresies is a false belief called Gnosticism, which claims a hidden knowledge for its adherents. The Gnostics profess they are a special, spiritual elite, which keeps them from being accountable for right or wrong behavior. This letter is John’s effort to combat the ungodly conduct that results and to encourage true believers to withdraw all fellowship from these false teachers. John, “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” probably wrote his three letters during the final years of his life.
Where Written: Probably Ephesus.
To Whom: To the chosen lady and her children. (This could either be a Christian woman and her children, or it could refer figuratively to a local church and the believers in it.)
Content: John continues showing his concern for others by warning of those who do not teach the truth about Jesus Christ. But John does have joy for those walking according to the commands of God. Jesus Christ is indeed the Son of God, and those trusting Him for salvation should live in truth, love, and obedience. The relationship believers have with those of the world must be discerning; false teachers should not be encouraged in any way (ver. 10-11). The apostle John concludes this small letter by stating his desire to return for a personal visit with the Christians.
Key Words: “Truth”; “Walk.”
The theme of “truth” transcends 2 John. This “truth” advocates love, knowledge, and joy for believers who “walk” in these virtues. John uses his apostolic authority to command this “walk” of obedience and to warn believers of false teachers who do not follow Christ’s teachings.
Themes: • Antichrists are in the world, and they seek to deceive us. • Obedience and love are inseparable. • A Christian’s support for heathen activities amounts to being a partaker in that evil. • Great joy comes to those who help others grow in truth.
